President Mikheil Saakashvili, who is currently out of the country, has missed a legal requirement to nominate three possible candidates for the chair of the central electoral commission (CEC) and is not expected to make the nominations until 10 January.
Saakashvili is in Germany for a political conference, though what exactly he is doing there seems somewhat mysterious as the president's spokespeople seem to have been deliberately vague about the event.
So while representatives of civil societry organisations met the president's staff today they did not discuss names of potential chairs or get an opportunity to promote the case of their preferred candidate Eka Siradze.
The president is expected to return to Batumi on 10 January and then make his nominations.
Under the law the opposition members have until 11 January to make their choice from the president's nominees or else the decision will fall to parliament. So already the president's tardiness has essentially deprived the opposition of any time to consult on their decision.
